Clint Hendricks held on in a late sprint on Saturday, before bursting across the line to grab the bronze medal in the men’s road race at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
With the contest coming down to a bunch dash, Australian rider Steele von Hoff clinched gold in 3:57:01, edging out Jonathan Mould of Wales.
In a tight race, Hendricks hung on for third place, narrowly holding off Northern Ireland’s Mark Downey and New Zealand’s Hayden McCormick on the line.
Brendon Davids finished 18th in the chasing group, nearly a minute off the pace, while Bradley Potgieter ended 27th, climbing specialist Nic Dlamini was 38th and Nolan Hoffman did not make it to the finish.
There were no South African riders in the women’s road race after Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio, the bronze medallist at the 2014 Glasgow Games, withdrew due to commitments with professional team Bigla Pro Cycling.
