A Blitzboks squad rich in experience will be in action at the at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia to defend their title from four years ago.
Seven members of the Blitboks side that won the Glasgow 2014 title have been included for this year’s showcase with Kyle Brown, Justin Geduld, Cecil Afrika, Werner Kok, Branco du Preez, Kwagga Smith and Seabelo Senate earning selection.
Nine of the players that won a historic bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games are among the 13 squad members for the Gold Coast trip.
The 2018 Commonwealth Games will include a women’s Sevens competition which will see South Africa sending both male and female teams.
The Springbok Women’s Sevens team will be buoyed by their bronze-medal winning performance Super7sBrisbane tournament earlier this month.
The side made a positive start to their season under the tutelage of new coach Paul Delport and new skipper Zintle Mpupha.
The women’s team will play in the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series qualifiers in Hong Kong next month before they head off their maiden Commonwealth Games in April. They will face New Zealand, Canada and Kenya in their pool matches.
The Blitzboks have been drawn in Pool A with Scotland, Papua New Guinea and Malaysia scheduled for 14-15 April at the Robina Stadium.
The men’s side will be at the Las Vegas tournament in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series over the weekend to defend their title.
They will face Wales, Canada and England in Pool B in Las Vegas
