South African riders delivered fine performances in the men’s and women’s contests at the weekend, with Daryl Impey, Ryan Gibbons and Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio contesting for the podium at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race in Geelong, Australia.
Impey, who successfully defended his title at the Tour Down Under the week before, went on to take third place in a sprint finish at the one-day race on Sunday
He was edged out by Italian winner Elia Viviani (Deceuninck-QuickStep) and Australian runner-up Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal), though he managed to hold off a late challenge from Gibbons, who snatched

Earlier, on Saturday, Moolman-Pasio earned fourth place in the women’s race, in the colours of her new team CCC-Liv.
The former Commonwealth Games bronze medallist crossed the line 34 seconds off the pace of Cuban winner Arlenis Sierra (Astana) and just 19 seconds outside a place on the podium.
