Delivering impressive performances in Joburg at the weekend, title contenders the Gauteng Jaguars and Free State Crinums were the only remaining unbeaten teams after the second week of competition in the Brutal Fruit Netball Premier League.
Defending champions the Jaguars, who won their opening matches at Ellis Park the previous week, picked up another two victories.
After sweeping aside the Limpopo Baobabs with a dominant 70-32 win on Friday night, the Jaguars went on to hand the Gauteng Golden Fireballs their first defeat of the Premier League season in a derby clash on Saturday.
While the Fireballs put up a fight, trailing by just two goals in the third quarter, the Jaguars managed to draw clear, earning a 46-36 win.
Former champions the Crinums were given an early scare on Saturday, but they maintained their composure to hand the KZN Kingdom Stars their first loss of the campaign.
The Diamonds led 10-8 at the end of the first quarter, but the Crinums fought back to bag a convincing 55-35 victory.
On Sunday, the Free State side went on to beat last year’s bottom feeders the Northern Cape Diamonds, earning a 76-23 win.
After two rounds of the six-week Premier League, the Jaguars held a narrow lead over the Crinums on goal difference at the top of the standings.
The campaign was set to move to Pretoria for the third round of matches this weekend, to be played at the University of Pretoria’s Rembrandt Hall.
