Raven Klaasen’s run at the Australian Open came to an end on Tuesday, after the 36-year-old former finalist and doubles partner Michael Venus of New Zealand were knocked out of the prestigious annual tournament.
Klaasen and Venus, who turned out as the No 6 seeds, fell in a straight sets defeat to Leonardo Mayer and Joao Sousa, who earned a 6-4 7-6 victory in their quarter-final clash.
It was Klaasen’s best performance at Melbourne Park since 2016 when he reached the quarter-finals of the hard-court Grand Slam with former American partner Rajeev Ram.
Following the defeat, South Africa’s campaign came to a close in the main draw of the tournament.
Big-serving ace Kevin Anderson and rising star Lloyd Harris were both eliminated in the early stages of the men’s singles division last week.
