Returning to the Euro-Africa Group 2 division this season, after gaining promotion last year, national Fed Cup captain Rene plant believes the SA squad can climb another step up the ladder in the international women’s team competition
“It is going to be our main challenge to build on the momentum from last year and our objective is to stay in Group 2,” Plant said.
“We are trying to create a network of enthusiasm and encouragement on and off the court.”
The SA squad gained promotion after beating Malta 2-1 in their promotion playoff final in Montenegro nine months ago, and she hoped to evoke the same spirit which carried them to victory in their previous outing.
“Having won four matches last year we are hoping to create that same winning atmosphere in Luxembourg within the team,” Plant said.
“Tennis South Africa has offered fantastic support to both myself and the players.
“We are arriving five days before our first match and this will enable us to prepare and bond as a team.”
While she was relying on a young team, Plant believed they had the ability to put up a fight in a tournament which was also set to feature Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Israel, Portugal, Tunisia and hosts Luxembourg.
“I am confident in the depth of our team and in our doubles combination,” she said.
“We have got a few different options that we can try out.”
